About The Secret in Mossy Swamp

Living in a tiny houseboat, Nikki is stuck with sharing a room with her little brother, Jesse, who does what little brothers do best…torture their sisters. Fed up, she decides to build a place of her own…a tree house where no boys are allowed. Meanwhile, something strange is happening on Bayou Platte. Things and people are coming up missing…and little stick dolls covered in moss, known locally as “signs” from the legendary Rougarou, are showing up in their place.

Is the Rougarou really to blame? Can Nikki get to the bottom of the mystery before things get worse? Find out in this third instalment of the Nikki Landry Swamp Legends Series!

Exclusive Excerpt

“Rouwrrrrrr!” Something tackled my legs and pushed me down on the bed. “Yahahaha…”

I swung my arms in the dark, but it was on top of me, its wet mouth snarling in my ear. Was it…?

“What’s going on in here?” Papa rushed through the door holding a lantern. The room lit up with the pale glow of kerosene light.

“Hah, I got you good.” Jesse stood up over me.

“Papa, Jesse tried to scare me.” My voice trembled.

“I did scare you.” Jesse jumped around on my bed. “Hahahaha.”

“Did not! I knew it was you.” I threw my legs over the side of the bed. “Papa, you’ve got to get him out of my room. I can’t have anything. He’s always in my stuff.” I jerked my finger at him. “And now he’s on my bed. I can’t even sleep!”

“It’s not that bad, is it, Tadpole?” Papa usually called me Tadpole unless he was being serious, then it was Nikki, or Nicole Elizabeth Landry if I was in big trouble.

My face felt hot and my eyes watered. “This has been my room since I was born—eleven years and four months to be exact.” I took in a long shaky breath. My brother was almost six, and Papa had moved him in with me last summer, promising to put the houseboat on land and build a room on for him.

“As long as our house is on the water, there ain’t no place to build another room,” Papa said.

“Well, park us on land,” I whined. “You promised.”

“I haven’t decided if I want to stay here permanent.” He scratched the stubble on his chin. “The crabs are biting real good here, but that could change any time. I have to stay mobile.”

“But you got the job as game warden so we didn’t have to move. You ain’t leaving that job, are you?”

Papa was in the habit of moving our houseboat to a new place a couple times a year, until I talked to the sheriff about that game warden job in the paper. Papa had been raised in the swamps and bayous all his life and he was smart enough to pass the tests to get that job, even though he said it didn’t pay as much as being a swamper when the times were right. I think he just liked being his own boss and being able to move when he wanted to.

It's been a week since 17-year old Zoe Jabril found out her best friend is a Guardian Angel, her boyfriend is a Nephilim, and a fellow classmate is a Fairy. What makes Zoe so special? She’s destined to unify Enlightens to battle evil—that is, if Demons don’t kill her first.

With ‘Project: Enlightens Unite’ underway, Zoe learns the history of the area wolf pack and realizes she's in a race against time to get her newly discovered talents under control. Despite struggling to fight a mysterious attraction to her new neighbor, rescue her boyfriend from Demons, and travel into Fairyland to convince the Summer King to join the fight, Zoe must still attend high school classes so her nosy parents don’t suspect anything is out of the ordinary before Demons can mount another attack.

Zoe will need all the help she can get, from the most unlikely of sources, if she’s to save her boyfriend's life and prevent the Devil from escaping Hell on her eighteenth birthday.

ZOE

Last night, a friend of mine rose from the dead—and I was the one who brought her back. So I guess . . . I’m an angel. Or, at least most of my friends think I am.
Even wrapped tightly in the arms of my favorite oversized PINK hoodie, I shivered. It was chilly for mid-April while sitting on my front porch with the sun just coming over the horizon, but that wasn’t where the tremor had come from.
I glanced up, startled by the high-pitched squealing of truck brakes that rang above the music playing from my iPod. The truck turned into the cul-de-sac and careened straight into the next door neighbors’ driveway. What made it really strange was the house had been empty since last October. I could still see the top of the “For Sale” sign on the manicured front lawn. I pulled out my cell phone to text my boyfriend, Shay.

     Me: Good morning!

As I waited for a response, a gray uniformed driver open his door and climbed down. He walked to the back of the truck; then multiple doors slammed.
“This furniture goes into the living room on the main level,” a man said.
I didn’t particularly want to be a nosy neighbor, but I couldn’t help myself. I eased higher on the top step, hoping to get a look at the man who seemed to be in charge. His back was to me, so all I could tell was he had short blond hair. He glanced down at something then looked back up, turned, and pointed toward a number of other, smaller trucks in the cul-de-sac parking. More uniformed men jumped out of the smaller trucks and gathered around their boss, waiting for instructions. I had no interest in watching a bunch of people move boxes, so I just stayed on the step and waited for my best friend, Kieran, and Shay.

Meet Kristin VanRisseghem

Picture
Kristin D. Van Risseghem grew up in a small town along the Mississippi River with her parents and older sister. And after receiving a double Bachelor of Science degree from Winona State University in Paralegal and Corrections, she worked as a Paralegal for various law firms around the Twin Cities for 14 years. Then she left the legal field and is now a Senior Buyer for a technology company.

Currently, Kristin lives in Minnesota with her husband and two Calico cats. She also loves attending book clubs, going shopping, and hanging out with friends. She has come to realize that she absolutely has an addiction to purses and shoes. They are her weakness and probably has way too many of both.

In the summer months, Kristin can usually be found lounging on her boat, drinking an ice cold something. Being an avid reader of YA and Women’s Literature stories, she still finds time to read a ton of books in-between writing. And in the winter months, her main goal is to stay warm from the Minnesota cold!

New Release Day and 10 Questions with Kristin D. Van Risseghem

5/20/2015

I'm thrilled to announce the release of my friend Kristin's Young Adult Fantasy novel, THE GUARDIAN, A SWORD & STILETTOS. I'm not sure if Kristin remembers this, but I was a very early beta reader for this novel, so it's really cool for me to see her writing grow and change over time and. And now her book is being released TODAY. How exciting is that?

Kristin is such a supportive and enthusiastic person, and I'm so pleased to have her on my blog today. Keep reading to learn a little bit more about my wonderful friend and her kick-butt new book.

10 Questions with KDV

What drew you to writing?

I took a lit course in highschool and a reading one in college. Didn’t think anything of it but enjoyed writing and reading back then. I started reading as something to do before I met my husband. Then when Twilight came out, a group of friends created a book club and it’s been downhill ever since. I read a ton. My cousin started writing and she asked me to (beta) read for her. I did but didn’t really know what I was doing. One of her friends asked me to read one of hers too so I did b/c my cousin said that my comments were spot on.

Then in January 2013 I dreamed of the warehouse scene. Didn’t think anything of it until the next night I had the same dream in the warehouse. Woke my husband up and told him about it. He said I should write it down. Of course I didn’t. The 3rd night, I dreamed of the tattoo and knew I had to start getting it down on paper so to speak. I started writing when I got home from work and wrote until the wee hours of the morning, so 7-8 hours at a time. Go to sleep a few hours and get up for work. Did that for 3 weeks.

What about your life influenced your drive to create?

I go all out in everything I do. Never half do stuff. It’s an all or nothing attitude.

Who are your favorite authors?

Not in any order: Richelle Meade, Julie Kagawa, Kristin Cast, Cassandra Claire, Kristin Hannah, Sherrilyn Kenyon and Sophie Kinsella.

JK Rowling gets her own line.

Describe the ideal situation for your reading time? Around 10AM, it’d be in the low 70’s and sunny. I’m out on the bow of the boat with my pillow propped up for my back. I have my pink cooler stocked with a couple bottles of ICE water, a bag of chips (Funonions) and a few bottles of beer or hard lemonade. And ready to read for a few hours. As the sun moves, I move with it for optimal sun exposure. Of course I’m in calling distance to my hubby to go get me more water, more snacks, more sun lotion…and of the battery charger b/c I forgot to charge the Kindle.

If you could invite any 7 people (living or dead) for a day out, or a meal together, who would it be?

Wow, that’s a lot of people to think about. So let’s start with the dead: Plato (maybe b/c I want to go to Greece), Einstein, and Lincoln. For the living: Prince William (OK, Kate can tag along) at Buckingham Palace, my husband (I guess) b/c when I asked him this question to get ideas, he said “I only need to have my wife”, Bill Gates (just so I could see his house), and I’d have an open spot so we could have a revolving visitor.

What is your favorite hot beverage?

Chai tea latte, but if it’s around October…then it’s pumpkin latte at Starbucks. (Note from S. J.: Girrrrrrrl, we could totally hang out with our books and PSLs...)

Can you share a little about your family? I’ve been married for 11 years. Met my hubby at a bar at the Mall of America when we both attended a mutual friends’ b-day party. I knew he was the one when I met him. He proposed 7 months later. We don’t have any human kids, but we’re proud parents of two calico cats (Daizy and Minnie). We had a dog (Sunny), but had to put her down in July  2014 for her own health reasons.

What were you like as a child? What was your favorite toy?

I loved stuffed animals, had a crap ton of them. I think one of my favorites was the two foot My Pretty Pony. I still have it.

If you had a superpower, what would it be?

Teleportation. I don’t like waiting in lines and I want to be where I’m supposed to be immediately.

If you were a superhero, what would your name be? What would you wear?

I’m not good at catchy names, so I’m going to steal Wonder Woman. I’d be wearing a purple cape for sure and as for the rest of the outfit? For sure it won’t be spandex!

Now that we've learned a little bit about Kristin, let's check out her book. Drum roll, please!

Introducing...

The Guardian, a Sword & Stilettos

Picture
Zoe Jabril could be just another 17-year-old girl attending parties with her friends and checking out cute guys—except her best friend is a Guardian Angel, and the boy she crushes on is a Nephilim, half-Angel, both sent to Earth to protect her. A high school classmate happens to be a trendsetting shopaholic Fairy. And now there’s a new Werewolf in town.

Now Zoe has to deal with her feelings toward Shay, who spreads a strange electrical current through her body every time he touches her. She is under constant attack from Demons, trying to kill and stop her from fulfilling the Prophecy: a girl will be born who will unite the Enlightens to battle evil. Then on top of that, between boring homework and drama with girls at school, she has to control new found talents if she’s to prevent the Devil from escaping Hell.

In order to do so, Zoe must devise a kick-ass plan ASAP or watch everyone die, because she’s running out of time. She turns eighteen in two months—the date Armageddon kicks off.

Excerpt

I stumbled into Kieran as a tremor moved through me, the hairs on my arms stood at attention like tiny lightning rods. “Do you feel that?” my voice sounded breathless, even to me.

He glanced sideways, “Feel what?”

“Look.” I held out my arms to him, “I feel strange. Like someone…” I rubbed my slightly numb hands over my forearms and sucked in a breath, as he hooked his head around. I fell into step beside him. “Never mind. It’s probably nothing.”

This happens when lightning’s about to strike, right?

The heat from the sun radiated off the few cars parked along Boutique Row, their owners engaged in mid-afternoon shopping. Store fronts displayed the new and trendy ‘must-have’ dresses, shorts, and shoes for the spring season. I paused to see my reflection. Not a hair was out of place. Thank God.

The Coffee Grind’s signature cinnamon dessert scent wafted through the air and my teeth hurt with the memory of sinking them into it time and again. What I wouldn’t give to be able to park my back end on one of their leather wing-back chairs and crack open a book, while the fire crackled next to me in the original stone hearth.

“Earth to Zoe,” Kieran’s gentle voice broke my trance. He poked my shoulder. “Are you going to order or what?”

My face flamed. “You could’ve ordered for me.” I rummaged through my purple backpack. “You know I get the same thing every time.”

Kieran watched me rub my arms, as he told the cashier, “She’ll also have an ice water.” He tilted his head toward the menu board. “Anything else?”

“Did you order me a chai?” I asked.

He nodded.

“Cause you know I can’t function without a good cup of—”

“You can’t function with it, either.”

Then I turned my attention toward the clerk, unsure if I recognized him or not. I hope he doesn’t know me. “Nothing else. Thanks.” I handed him some bills.

“How’s track going, Zoe?” the clerk asked.

Damn.

“Think you’ll make it to State?”

I realized he was a sophomore on the team. Our paths crossed during several meets. He looked thin in his black polo shirt, and I knew a mirror would reflect a similar physique in me, though my lavender sundress tried to disguise it.

I shrugged. “I have fast times, but we’ll see. If I don’t make it this year, there’s always senior year.”

My fingertips skimmed the glass display of mammoth muffins and assorted pastries as we moved down the aisle to the ‘Pick-up Here’ sign. A heavy coffee aroma hung in the air.

A figure in dark clothing with yellow-tipped, spiked hair stared at me from outside the glass entrance door. His eyes narrowed on contact with mine.

Chills rushed through my body.

Get Your Copy of Mosaic Today!

3/25/2015

Guess who's having the best month ever? This girl right here! And why, you might ask?

Well, I'm so glad you asked...

Not only have I released one book this month (ahem, DANIEL THE CAMP-ER), but it gets even better.

I've released TWO BOOKS this month.

Please join me in welcoming a Mosaic: a Compilation of Creative Writing to the world!
Picture
I can't take all of the credit for this one, though. MOSAIC was a group effort by nine alumni of Joe Bunting's Story Cartel course. I've spoken of the Story Cartel course in the past, but basically it's an online course organized by the founder of The Write Practice. The course focuses on building a community of writers. I was lucky enough to participate in the course twice, and both times I met a number of extremely supportive and dedicated writers I'm so happy to call my Cartel. And even more than that--they're my dear friends.

MOSAIC was an idea developed by my friend James Lee Schmidt in order to showcase the varieties of strengths and talents within a particular session of the Story Cartel course. The poetry and prose within Mosaic's pages touch upon every human emotion.

I chose to include two pieces I wrote during my time in the Story Cartel course: "Daniel the Draw-er Makes a Friend" and the haunting short story "Bees." Without Story Cartel and the feedback from my course participants, neither of these stories (or my published books) would exist.

This is my invitation to you.  Stop by Amazon or Smashwords and pick up your copy of MOSAIC, which is absolutely FREE and ready for you to enjoy on the eReader of your choice.

If you enjoy it, please let us know... and tell others.

Before I go, I'd like to say a few special thanks o the other members of The Collaborative:

Ann: Thank you for the countless hours you spent formatting and playing around with Amazon, Smashwords, and Scrivener. I feel like you were baptized by fire, there.
Margie: Thank you for your thoroughness and organization. I'm not sure we could have done it without you.
Lee: You are an endless supply of encouragement and marketing links. So lucky to know you.
Christy: You have such enthusiasm for this project, and writing in general. I can always count on you to be a cheerleader.
Stef: Thanks for all of your hard work on the website. It turned out fantastic.
Brian: I've enjoyed getting to know you better during this project. Hope there are more to come in our future.
Angie: The cover is amazing, but I had no doubts you would deliver. Thank you for being a friend, mentor, and listening ear. You're awesome!
And last but not least, James:  Thank you for thinking of me when you pictured this project. You have always been so supportive of me and my writing, and it's been an honor to participate in this project.

Until next time...

I feel like I'm always apologizing for not keeping you guys up on my news. This time, I don't have a very good excuse. Well, unless you count publishing a book as a good excuse. You might. I do, but I don't really count.

In a perfect world I would've created more buzz: giveaways, countdowns, cover reveals, and all that jazz. Shoulda, woulda, coulda... Time just got away from me, and my sanity put limits on how much promo I could manage on my own (hey, wanna be my publicist?  #kiddingnotkidding).

With or without the proper amount of fanfare, this day has come anyway.
DANIEL THE CAMP-ER IS HERE!!!!!!!
Picture
Yes, you read that right. The second book in the DANIEL THE DRAW-ER series is now available for purchase on Amazon. Whether you're a fan of ebooks or the real deal, I've got you covered. Click on the book cover below or the appropriate links to pick up your very own copy of this supremely goofy book. Or, if you prefer, visit my bookstore to order an autographed paperback.

And if you live in the U.S., don't forget to enter the giveaway at the bottom of the page. You could win one of several prizes, including an Amazon gift card or copies of my books!

Without further ado...

Daniel the Camp-er

Picture
There are a few simple rules Daniel follows.

Rule One: never let an adult see your weakness. Daniel made that mistake and look where he ended up—summer camp.

Rule Two: never make fun of the person who feeds you, unless you like Miss Gunderson’s peppery pancakes and green hamburgers.

Rule Three: stay away from girls who love Glitter Ponies. They have cooties, after all.

And Rule Four: never, ever lose your magic pencil.

But Daniel has broken all of his own rules. Now he’s stuck and starving at Camp Bigfoot with the school bully as his bunkmate and an ooey-gooey girl who won’t leave him alone. If all of that wasn’t bad enough, his prized possession, a pencil that brings his drawings to life, has gone missing and wacky creatures are popping up all over camp.

Can Daniel survive Camp Bigfoot and find his magic pencil before it’s too late?

In my next blog post, I'll share an exclusive excerpt in my next blog post on DANIEL THE CAMP-ER. Stay tuned!

A Little Thunderclap help for DANIEL THE CAMP-ER

2/18/2015

I know I've been really quiet about it. Well, in fact, completely silent about it... BUT... The official launch date for DANIEL THE CAMP-ER is coming up soon. Like 11ish days soon. I owe you guys a blog post about the process, but I can't even think about it right now. Be patient, my peeps. Once the synapses in my brain recover from last weekend's big editing/formatting push, I'll give you more details.

In the meantime, I could reeeeeeally use your help.

Many of you probably have seen this already on my Twitter or Facebook, but for those of you who haven't, let me fill you in. I'm trying to gather support for a Thunderclap campaign to promote DANIEL THE CAMP-ER's release. If you're not familiar with Thunderclap, basically you can allow a single post on Facebook, Twitter, or Tumblr (or all three) for any campaign that interests you. When a campaign meets the goal of 100 supporters within the set amount of time, that campaign is successful and those posts will go through. If a campaign fails to meet the goal of 100 supporters, nothing happens.

With 100 supporters, the message in the widget below (see the yellow box with the Polaroid picture in it?) will potentially reach 150k people. As an indie author, there aren't many opportunities for that kind of exposure unless you're forking over the dough or you have an amazing platform (and I do not, at the moment).

At the time of this post, I have 73 supporters and need 27 more before March 2, 2015. Would you consider clicking on a few buttons to show your support? It would mean the world to me.
You can go to my campaign by clicking the banner below or, if that's not showing up for you, following the link at the bottom of this post. Thank you so, so, so much.
