Daniel the Camp-er: Exclusive Excerpt on Arachnid Extermination

3/3/2015

Yup. If you haven't already figured it out from the title, today we're talking about spider squishing.

As I promised yesterday, I'm going to share a little bit from my new book, DANIEL THE CAMP-ER.  You won't see this excerpt shared anywhere else, guaranteed, because I know what excerpts everyone else has.  Muahaha!

In this part of the story, our hero, Daniel, has located his camp counselor, Marq-with-a-Q, and is trying to convince him to help with an eight-legged problem.

Enjoy!

The Spider Menace, a.k.a Great-Great-Great Grandpa Milton

Picture
I clear my throat and blurt, “Could you please come back to the cabin with me? The spider needs to be stopped before it can crawl up somebody’s nose and . . . You just need to squish it!”

Marq-with-a-Q’s eyes grow big. “No, no, no! Why would I do that?”

“Because it’s a blood-sucking spider.” Duh.

“I’m sorry, Daniel, but I can’t be involved in the killing of a species on the brink of extinction.”

I blink. “Huh?”

“You haven’t heard about that? It’s huge, huge news,” he says. “I’m not surprised you haven’t learned about this in school. They don’t want you to know that, at this rate, spiders will be extinct by the year 2025.”

I sigh and tap my foot. “Yeah, well, could they at least hurry that up a little bit? I’d take extinction over a spider making himself at home in my brain while I’m sleeping.”

Marq-with-a-Q makes an unhappy tut-tut noise. “Daniel, Daniel, Daniel. Think about what you’re saying. If we didn’t have spiders, our entire ecosystem would be thrown out of whack.”

“Who’s killing spiders?” Rain Stevens pops out of nowhere and touches my elbow with his cold hand. I scream, shrill and loud.

“Girls, quiet down!” Camp Director Corto calls out without even looking up from his packet of veggies roasting over the flames.

“Don’t do that,” I gasp, but I’m not sure anyone can hear me over the pounding of my heart.

“My great-great-great grandfather Milton came back as a spider. A wolf spider.” Rain’s lower lip wobbles. “Please don’t kill spiders.”

“Well, your great-great-great grandfather Milton is creepy,” I say. I don’t even know what Rain’s talking about, but I don’t plan to find out.

Release Day!  DANIEL THE CAMP-ER IS HERE!

3/2/2015

I feel like I'm always apologizing for not keeping you guys up on my news. This time, I don't have a very good excuse. Well, unless you count publishing a book as a good excuse. You might. I do, but I don't really count.

In a perfect world I would've created more buzz: giveaways, countdowns, cover reveals, and all that jazz. Shoulda, woulda, coulda... Time just got away from me, and my sanity put limits on how much promo I could manage on my own (hey, wanna be my publicist?  #kiddingnotkidding).

With or without the proper amount of fanfare, this day has come anyway.
DANIEL THE CAMP-ER IS HERE!!!!!!!
Picture
Yes, you read that right. The second book in the DANIEL THE DRAW-ER series is now available for purchase on Amazon. Whether you're a fan of ebooks or the real deal, I've got you covered. Click on the book cover below or the appropriate links to pick up your very own copy of this supremely goofy book. Or, if you prefer, visit my bookstore to order an autographed paperback.

And if you live in the U.S., don't forget to enter the giveaway at the bottom of the page. You could win one of several prizes, including an Amazon gift card or copies of my books!

Without further ado...

Daniel the Camp-er

Picture
There are a few simple rules Daniel follows.

Rule One: never let an adult see your weakness. Daniel made that mistake and look where he ended up—summer camp.

Rule Two: never make fun of the person who feeds you, unless you like Miss Gunderson’s peppery pancakes and green hamburgers.

Rule Three: stay away from girls who love Glitter Ponies. They have cooties, after all.

And Rule Four: never, ever lose your magic pencil.

But Daniel has broken all of his own rules. Now he’s stuck and starving at Camp Bigfoot with the school bully as his bunkmate and an ooey-gooey girl who won’t leave him alone. If all of that wasn’t bad enough, his prized possession, a pencil that brings his drawings to life, has gone missing and wacky creatures are popping up all over camp.

Can Daniel survive Camp Bigfoot and find his magic pencil before it’s too late?

In my next blog post, I'll share an exclusive excerpt in my next blog post on DANIEL THE CAMP-ER. Stay tuned!

A Little Thunderclap help for DANIEL THE CAMP-ER

2/18/2015

I know I've been really quiet about it. Well, in fact, completely silent about it... BUT... The official launch date for DANIEL THE CAMP-ER is coming up soon. Like 11ish days soon. I owe you guys a blog post about the process, but I can't even think about it right now. Be patient, my peeps. Once the synapses in my brain recover from last weekend's big editing/formatting push, I'll give you more details.

In the meantime, I could reeeeeeally use your help.

Many of you probably have seen this already on my Twitter or Facebook, but for those of you who haven't, let me fill you in. I'm trying to gather support for a Thunderclap campaign to promote DANIEL THE CAMP-ER's release. If you're not familiar with Thunderclap, basically you can allow a single post on Facebook, Twitter, or Tumblr (or all three) for any campaign that interests you. When a campaign meets the goal of 100 supporters within the set amount of time, that campaign is successful and those posts will go through. If a campaign fails to meet the goal of 100 supporters, nothing happens.

With 100 supporters, the message in the widget below (see the yellow box with the Polaroid picture in it?) will potentially reach 150k people. As an indie author, there aren't many opportunities for that kind of exposure unless you're forking over the dough or you have an amazing platform (and I do not, at the moment).

At the time of this post, I have 73 supporters and need 27 more before March 2, 2015. Would you consider clicking on a few buttons to show your support? It would mean the world to me.
You can go to my campaign by clicking the banner below or, if that's not showing up for you, following the link at the bottom of this post. Thank you so, so, so much.

Ring In the New Year With Daniel the Draw-er!

12/31/2014

I've been absolutely horrid about blogging, I'm sorry. After finishing up the second draft of DANIEL 2 and various other writing commitments simmering on the backburners, I needed the break from words and promotion. The break has been good and good for my family during the holidays, but my mind is going crazy. Yep, I miss writing!

Now it's New Year's Eve, and I'm taking the time to look back on my year and make plans for 2015. Most of my plans include bookish things, and I'm very excited to get back into editing and writing and editing some more.

Well, I'm kind of excited. Certainly I've mentioned before that editing is not my fave? It'll be exciting to send those books out into the world, though. It'll make my editing nightmares worth it in the end. Anyway, that's another post...

Today I've launched a Countdown Deal on Amazon for DANIEL THE DRAW-ER. The Kindle version is normally $2.99, but for the next few days it will be at $.99 and $1.99 respectively. Snag your copy or share with a friend or your child's teacher. Might I also suggest pairing the Kindle version with the audiobook for the emerging reader? Wink, wink.

It's just my special way of ringing in the new year. Enjoy, and very best wishes for a magical 2015! And thank you for making my 2014 unforgettable!

XOXO!

Out of the blue, my 10-year-old came home full of questions about my book, the characters, the sequel. And he drew me this:
